Bruce

In "Disk Clean Up", I currently have Compress Old Files unchecked. I have
been told I should compress them, and I have been told not to compress them.
What do the MVP's think of this? I like to keep my computer neat and clean,
but not at the expense of it's performance.

Thanks & Seasons Greetings.

If you are not pressed for space, I would suggest, do not compress files
through the Cleanup utility. From what I've read, it will cause problems
with your system. I am not an MVP but, that seems to be the general
consensus.

LOL, JAX

Thanks.

I don't know why, but I have heard the same thing. Didn't want to do it if
there was a possibilioty of a problem. I'll let it alone.

Seasons Greetings to you.

Hi Bruce,

Here is a way to make Cleanup a little less of a pain. It's not as
complicated as it looks at first glance. It will bypass the compress
function. You'll be amazed.

Speedup Cleanup

In Regedt, select the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE pane, then select the Software
folder. Pull down the Registry menu, and click Save Key to back up this
folder for safekeeping.

Double-click each folder to open the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ ...cont. next
line
\Explorer\VolumeCac-hes\Compress old files.

In the right pane, double-click the REG_SZ key to edit it. Save the value
in case you wish to restore it later. It reads
B50F5260-0C2111D2-AB56-00A0C9082678. Press Delete to remove the value, then
click OK. Close Regedt32.

There is no problems with Compression. There can become a problem with Disk Cleanup, why is not known. Jax gave you the solition to that problem. If the problem occurs you will just no longer be able to use the feature - same as not using it know.

Some files are already compressed as standard. One would use Compress Old Files to save space if one needed to. So look at your free space and if low decide between a new faster cheaper drive or to slow down access to some files you don't use.

Hey David,

Thanks for the reinforcement. You have helped me, a time or three, in the
past, thanks for that too.

Merry Christmas,
JAX
