Disk clean hangs

I am running WindowsXP Pro on a system with 2 hard drives: 'C' (Master)
and 'E' (Slave). I can run disk clean that comes with windows system tools
just fine on 'E', but when I try to run it on 'C' it locks up. When locked,
cpu usage is between 96-99%. Even after I hit 'cancel' (on the dick clean
window) the process cleanmgr.exe is still running hours later and cpu usage
is still 96-99%. I must end the process manually through taskmanager.
Defragging doesn't help. Neither does scanning the disk for errors -
surface or program.
Drive C is 5.04GB, drive E is 4GB. Running 448MB RAM, 800MHz Athlon proc,
TYAN KT133 board, VIA chipset
Suggestions?

just select one item at a time to cleanup

Perhaps I should have clarified just where it is hanging. It stops and
hangs during the "Disk Cleanup is calculating how much space you will be
able to free on (C:). This may take a few minutes to complete."
The progress bar is about 10% full, and below it, is "Scanning: compress
old files".
I never compress old files, (that box is unchecked) but it scans for them
anyway, I guess. It is either hanging there, or when it tries to transition
to the next step.

ok
rather than do a disk cleanup

first, empty the recycle bin

next delete files in your temp folder

also go to control panel....internet options

then delete temp internet files, clear history etc

in other words just do a manual disk clean up

That's what I've been doing, but I was hoping there were some ideas to help
get disk cleanup past its freeze point.

Have you run scandisk on the c: drive. There may be
errors, which are causing the cleanup problem.
