Indexing will not cause a hard drive to fail. However, you can turn it off
in Services if you like. Run Services as Administrator.

Stop lying you dumb stupid idiot!

The reason is

You are an idiot! Hell, you're so incompetent you can't even get one
little install of Vista to run properly.

Bullshit!

<---deleted the rest of this idiots lying diatribe as a public service--->

To the OP:
The disk accessing by Vista will cease after a short initial period.
Don't worry about it. It is indexing and learning and adjusting to your
personal computer use and habits. In essence, you are training your
computer.
Pay no attention to this nym shifting jackass...he's ignorance about
Vista is wildly known.

The other poster knows what he is talking about. This Frank just rants
and rants. I would not listen to anything he says. He has no
creditability.

Your ass-umption is that all people use their computers like you do. To
do nothing but post crap in newsgroups!

To the OP

Ignore this big fat bafoon! I know what I am talking about, He does not.

ha ha ha ha I love it.
If you have lots of files coming and going, (example downloads with
torrents) thousands of emails a day (lots of people do get thousands a
day you know) and generally lots of changes made to your system each
day, indexing NEVER STOPS! It goes along crunching and crunching.

The only way is to reduce the indexing down to minimal locations as I
described or turn the darn thing off completely!

The cons outweigh the pros

Measekite Delusional Disorder (MDD) is a psychiatric diagnosis denoting a
psychotic mental illness that involves holding one or more non-bizarre
delusions and assigns imaginary names to posters especially in Vista type
forums.

In the absence of any other significant psychopathology (signs or symptoms
of mental illness). In particular, a person with Measekite
Delusional Disorder (MDD) has never met a woman or had sex with another
human, although tactile (touch) or olfactory (smell) hallucinations may be
present if they are related to the theme of the delusion.

A person with Measekite Delusional Disorder can't be functional and tends to
show odd or bizarre behavior aside from these delusions.
"Despite the encapsulation of the delusional system and the relative sparing
of the personality, the patient's way of life is likely to
become more and more overwhelmed by the dominating effect of the abnormal
beliefs".

If you feed your disk, it won't chew your disk

You mean Vista SP3.

I don't know where you are coming up with that stuff! I've run Vista
since it was released in 2007 and still have yet to see one hard drive
fail in over 10yrs. time! Personally I've found Vista more stable then
previous versions and am currently beta testing 7 seeing additional
improvements there.

right-click your C: drive in MY COMPUTER, select "properties" and
uncheck the box next to "index this drive for faster searching"

That doesn't stop the service from running or apparently accessing the
disk heavily.

Start -> Run -> Services.msc. Change the indexing service to disabled.

The only SP3 that's been in the last year is for XP not Vista. Vista saw
SP1 and now sees the beta for SP2.

You're clueless: "Lorin" was joking about Windows 7's name.
