XP SP2. Intermittently I will get this error upon boot up. If I insert the
XP CD, once it gets to the point where it states "Press any key to boot from
CD" I can remove the CD and the computer boots fine. I do not believe that
this is a hardware error per se.

Has anyone seen this? I think it started to happen after installing one of
the MS updates.

at that point it has NOT booted off the CD nor has it loaded XP nor read the
MBR on your HD.........that comes in the next stage.
So I suspect a Hardware problem............try running chkdsk on your HD.
You can also try tunning the Recovery Console off the CD which will give you
a command prompt...type in "fix mbr"
here is an MS article on the Recovery Console and its commands

That error is produced by the computer's BIOS and happens long before
any Windows components have been loaded so it has to be a hardware
issue, most likely with the hard drive itself.

Go to the hard drive manufacturer's web site and download their free
diagnostic test utility. Run this to check out the drive for possible
problems or defects.

Good luck
