A client has a Windows 2000 server domain controller, SP4.
The DNS is not showing the SRV records and is therefore
not providing active dns updates. Also this will not
allow a second W2K server to join the domain as a DC.
The reason for this is as follows:
On inspection the the Domain Name System (DNS) suffix of
your computer name does not match the domain name that
the DC belongs to.
Eg the computer name is: server1
The domain name is: domain.intra
The computer name should be: server1.domain.intra
After a server has been promoted to a DC, it is not
possible to rename the computer on the Network
Identification tab.
According to article 257623 there is only one way to
rename the Computer name without demoting the server (and
losing active directory info) and that involves editing
the registery:
Modify the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip
\Parameters
Specify the following values.Name Type Value
Hostname REG_SZ computer name
NV Hostname REG_SZ computer name
NV Domain REG_SZ domain name
In our case the NV Domain REG_SZ domain name is empty.
Finally, the question:
As this is the only domain controller and has an Exchange
Server on it, risking a name change with a Registery
Change and losing the Active Directory is not something I
will do lightly. Is this a big risk?
Thanks
Geoff
