disconnects and wont shut down

i have broadband and every so often my messengers
disconnect and web pages come up as no page to display
but the 2 lights on my broadband box are on and the
internet is still connected but the only way to be able
to view web pages again and log into messenger is to
restart but when i do it wont shut down and stays on
the "windows is shutting down" message and i have to
manually restart by pressing the button on my
tower....help has any one any ideas what the problem is

Hi,

Do you use a firewall or router? if so you need to open up the ports so the
connection isn't lost in the first place.
