I use RDC on a Windows XP Pro pc to connect to a Windows 2003 Std server.
As I am new to this utility, I cannot find Disconnect or end the session
control on the remote desktop. In addition, I cannot see the icons and
running situation of pcAnywhere and Domino messaging server. Is there any
hidden control that I don't know? Your guidance is appreciated.

Thanks,

Scott

The start button should have "disconnect" in its menus.

You shold also - if the remote screen is full-screened on your local
computer - be able to press CTRL+ALT+END and have it act like CTRL+ALT+DEL
on the remote system.

Shenan,

Thanks for your advice.

The Disconnect is in the position of Shut Off Computer on Windows XP Pro
computer and one of options in Shut Down on Windows 2003 Std server.

If I lock the server using CTRL+ALT+END from the remote computer, where is
the Disconnect button? If I just click the Disconnect without locking the
server, is the server opened for anyone locally without protection? Is
there anyway to avoid this security hole?

Thanks,

Scott

CTRL+ALT+END should bring up the choices - including "Shutdown" and if you
click on that and choose disconnect - it will - leaving your session going.
You could also just use the "X" to disconnect or if the logged on user
doesn't need to stay logged on (I cannot think of any cases why they
should - if they need to stay on for some applications - those are badly
written server applications!) - then you can just LOG OFF - which would log
that user off and disconnect the session.

Note that unless you use the /console option in Remote Desktop Client - you
were never actually connected at the console (and there would have had to
have been an active console session running for you to use that switch
effectively anyway) - so the remotre screen never unlocked.
(** Having said that - physical security and having your screen lock after a
given period of time are necessities on a production server - IMHO.)

If there is some badly written application you are running on a production
server that you have to be logged in to use - then you could use the
CTRL+ALT+END method and choose "Lock" instead of any of the other options -
which - even if you connected to the console session - would lock the
screen. You could then disconnect using the "X" method and everything would
be fine.
