Discarding an old backup

When using a CDR disk for backup, what do you do to keep sensitive data from
falling into the hands of someone that shouldn't get the disk if you wanted
to discard the disk in the trash due to having more recent backup versions.
As for as I am aware there is no way to reformat a CDR, so how do you make
the data on them not accessible by whoseever's hands they might fall into?

Physically destroy the disc or avoid the need for disposal altogether and
use cd-rw for backup.
