Opps! ok guys, how do i get the door to the cd drive to open. Pushing the
button does not work and i have a cdr stuck in there.HeLP!

There is a little hole on the front of the drive, take a paper clip or pin
and push it in the hole.

Thanks Paul, I am such a newbie.

I put some pictures on a CD. Then I popped it back in when it popped out, and
viewed the pix. Then when I tried to get the cd out, the thing would not pop
out. I got it out with paul's advice (thanks) but why, and what am I doing???
This happened once before, and my grandson had me re-b oot and do something,
but what is the reason ? Am I doing or not doing something?

Paul's advice worked because the tiny hole leads to a physical release
"latch" and pushing it with the paperclip releases the drive. The drive
getting stuck like this is probably not because of anything you are
doing. It is usually because the drive is failing and should be
replaced. This is very easy and inexpensive to do but if you are
uncomfortable opening your computer, take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of
BigComputerStore/GeekSquad). Have all your data backed up before you
take the machine into a shop.

Thank you for your advice, my computer is fairly new, but I guess this drive
thing can happen even in a new computer. Will it hurt the computer if I have
to open the drive with a paper clip now and then? It works fine when I put my
scrabble cd in and out.
Now a new question. Exactly what do I do when I "back up my data??

1. It shouldn't hurt the drive to do this, but if it happens more than a
few times you'll want to replace it before the paperclip trick doesn't
work any more. Since the computer is fairly new, it may still be under
warranty. If this is the case, contact whoever you bought it from and
get the drive replaced.

2. You should back up your files on a regular basis. Only you know what
that time period should be. Ask yourself if your hard drive died, what
would you lose that would be irreplaceable and that will help you
decide. For my own system, I do a full backup every week to an external
hard drive with a program that makes an identical copy of my system and
then once a month I burn my user files to DVD. This is a MacBook, so the
program I use won't work for you.

2a. For Windows machines, look at either Acronis True Image (does
imaging and incremental backups) or Second Copy (doesn't do imaging but
does a great job of backing up). Purchase an external hard drive on
which to store your backups and/or images.

http://www.acronis.com
http://www.centered.com

Go to those websites, read about the programs, make your own decision
based on your individual needs.
