I do not know how to activate my disc detector. I want it to run *.exe
programs automatically. I was able to get it to start automatically for cds.

Thank you,

Kia

Start>Control Panel>Disc Detector>tick "Enable Disc Detector">Select
the drive>Click Apply and OK out.

I have 2 CD rom drives, D and E, D has ceased responding but shows
ATAPI bootup at start up and drawer opens and closes but disc is not
recognised, E drive is working normally. Have checked that disc
detector is enabled. Any help please. Running Win ME, I know this is
XP site but desperate.

Have you tried giving it a good blow with an air duster?
Don't shake the can or turn it upside down while using.

Blower not done anything, everything seems normal except not
recocnising disc, searching light comes on for about 8 seconds then
stops. If I removed D from Hardware Manager then rebooted might that
make it find "new" hardware ?, it was working fine up to about a week
ago so I think that I might have done something that I can't retrace.
Settings are same for both D and E, D is CD Rom and DVD, E is CD Rom R
& RW.
Thanks for suggestion though.

This tale of woe sounds like the laser has gone bye bye. The only cure for
such a situation is a new drive.

Thanks Jim, I was thinking of getting a new computer but wanted to wait
until Vista is established with patches available for the software I
already have.

The reason I suggested the air duster was because I had a similar
problem to yours just last weekend with a DVD/CD drive. The duster
didn't work for me either but it does for some folks.

I removed the drive from the computer and removed parts of the casing to
expose the lens and PCB. I cleaned the lens and other delicate parts by
wetting a clean hanky on my tongue and gently wiping any part that
looked wipeable. Not very technical but I had nothing to lose as I was
ready to bin the drive anyway.

I must have cleaned the right bits because it worked fine when I
replaced it. Might be worth your while to have a go at this as you too
have nothing to lose now - and may perhaps find it an interesting
exercise even if it doesn't work

Regards
Joe Steele.

Thanks Joe, I will try that after I have tried re installing OS then,
if that does not work I will remove D disc from the Hardware Manager
and see if it is found as "new hardware" on reboot. If all else fails I
will take off the tower case and hope that I can get any bits I undo
back together again. keep the suggsetions coming please.
