I do not know how to activate my disc detector. I want it to run
*.exe
programs automatically. I was able to get it to start automatically
for cds.
Thank you,
Kia-
I have 2 CD rom drives, D and E, D has ceased responding but shows
ATAPI bootup at start up and drawer opens and closes but disc is not
recognised, E drive is working normally. Have checked that disc
detector is enabled. Any help please. Running Win ME, I know this is
XP site but desperate.-
Have you tried giving it a good blow with an air duster?
Don't shake the can or turn it upside down while using.
Joe Steele-
Blower not done anything, everything seems normal except not
recocnising disc, searching light comes on for about 8 seconds then
stops. If I removed D from Hardware Manager then rebooted might that
make it find "new" hardware ?, it was working fine up to about a week
ago so I think that I might have done something that I can't retrace.
Settings are same for both D and E, D is CD Rom and DVD, E is CD Rom
R
& RW.
Thanks for suggestion though.

This tale of woe sounds like the laser has gone bye bye. The only
cure
for
such a situation is a new drive.
Jim-
Thanks Jim, I was thinking of getting a new computer but wanted to
wait
until Vista is established with patches available for the software I
already have.-
The reason I suggested the air duster was because I had a similar
problem to yours just last weekend with a DVD/CD drive. The duster
didn't work for me either but it does for some folks.
I removed the drive from the computer and removed parts of the casing
to
expose the lens and PCB. I cleaned the lens and other delicate parts
by
wetting a clean hanky on my tongue and gently wiping any part that
looked wipeable. Not very technical but I had nothing to lose as I was
ready to bin the drive anyway.
I must have cleaned the right bits because it worked fine when I
replaced it. Might be worth your while to have a go at this as you too
have nothing to lose now - and may perhaps find it an interesting
exercise even if it doesn't work
Regards
Joe Steele.
