Disc Defragmenter schedule says "Never"

When I go to schedule a disc defrag, I set it up to do a weekly one.
Everything works okay until I restart the computer. When I check the defrag
information, it says on the next scheduled run NEVER, but it still shows that
I have a daily defrag enabled. I click the weekly and daily button, put in
back to daily and it says it will defrag when it's supposed to. I even tried
to schedule the defrag manually and it does the same thing. This has just
started to happen here in the last few weeks. Anybody know why it's doing
this? If not, should I just defrag the disc manually and leave things alone?
Thanks!!

Why in the world do you think that the discs should be defragged daily?
Vista Help states:
Fragmentation happens to a hard disk over time as you save, change, or
delete files. The changes that you save to a file are often stored at a
location on the hard disk that's different from the original file.
Additional changes are saved to even more locations. Over time, both the
file and the hard disk itself become fragmented, and your computer slows
down as it has to look in many different places to open a file.

Notice the words "over time." Unless you have performance measuring tools
such as PC Magazine uses in testing computers, I seriously doubt, that there
is any change in performance that is noticable to you. On Windows XP, if
you checked for the system to anlayze the drive, it would't suggest doing so
for four or five months. I used the Windows XP system an average of 5 hours
a day.

However, try setting your automatic defrag to run at 11:00 p.m. Leave your
computer on until the next morning and check to see if it has completed the
process. It takes a long period of time on the large disc drives in use
today that contain a large volume of data.

I can't answer te specific question about why it's doing this, but
defragging weekly is way overkill for almost everyone. Personally, I don't
schedule defrags but do them manually, about once a month. Since I don't see
any real performance gain after defragging, even that once a month would
seem to be overkill.

I agree 100% and thank you for the reply. I was doing the daily thing to try
and figure out why it wasn't defraging on a schedule. I'll try the 11:00PM
once a month thing and see if it sticks. I still get the NEVER for when
defrag is scheduled to do it the next time, every time I restart my computer
and have no idea why. Thanks again..

It's lovely how so many people chimed in with irrelevant opinions about how often the OP defrags his disk and nobody answered his question. I have exactly the same problem. Whenever I set defrag on a schedule, the next time I open disk defrag, it always says next scheduled run is 'never'. Does anyone actually have a solution to this?
