Hi,
Is anyone using XP with FAT32 and disc compression? Is
there any problems with screen readers or magnification
software and disk compression?
Jim H.
XP's disk compression feature is only available on NTFS volumes. Other than
the possibility of a slight lag, there should be no difference in
functionality. For the most part handling data on these volumes occurs
without the user noticing any change in performance but limited memory or
processing power may produce the lag that I mentioned.
XP's implementation of FAT32 supports folder/file compression (also called
"Compressed Folders" which produces *.ZIP files). These would need to be
handled on a *.zip file by *.zip file basis. Some programs will interface
fine with data stored in this type of archive; others will choke and need
the data decompressed first.
If using a third party compression tool on FAT32 volumes, contact their
technical support for more exact answers on how their compression interacts
with other programs and operating system features.
