Why does disc cleanup not work on my PC? The status bar
stalls half way through and even if left running for
hours does not progress beyond the first 3-4 bars.

This may be the "compress old files" search function of

the disk cleanup utility, which appears to stick on that.
The solution is to remove the registry key for that
either manually with the registry editor, or useing one
of the auto fixes available such as this one here;
