disc cleanup freezes

what or how can i do a disc clean up when it freezes on you? the box comes up
with the loading bar and says at the bottom of the box 'compress old files..'
but doesnt do anything. please help.

Save on Desktop.
Double click the icon once downloaded.
The icon can then be discarded.
