disc clean up won't function

whenever i try to perform a disc clean up maintainence, it appears to begin to work, but then it just sits there for hours and won't function. am i doing something wrong?

The lack of functionality on disk cleanup may be associated with the viruses
on your computer which you will find difficult to erase using conventional
methods since your system is too compromised.
