Disc Clean-up not functioning

Help!

The Disc Clean-up does not get beyone the place where it
says it is checking the compressed files for C Drive
whether I click it in the Start-up menu or click my
computer and go into the Maintenance file. The Task
Scheduler also does not seem to work although I am able
to get the Disc Framenter to work.

There are no viruses according to the Virus Scan.
This seems to have occurred around the time I downloaded
the Windows Messenger to use IM. Have tried to remove
that and no longer use it but although it shows on my
Programs and initiates if I click it there, it does not
appear to be on my ADD/Remove section.

Would appreciate some help and thanks.
 
It's not checking compressed files, it's Compress Old Files...look at the
size to the right of the task and you'll see it's probably huge.
Uncheck the Compress old files box, run disk cleanup again, and see if it
speeds up.

Have you installed a firewall software like zone alarm? I
have and am having the same problem with disk cleanup.
Removing that IF installed might help
