Disc Check not working

E-machine - Windows XP SP3 - 2.80GHZ 504MB Ram - AV Software PC Tools

Had an error saying need to run check disc due to bad sector - tried to run disc check and it won't run even on reboot. Of course I can't defrag now and puter running awfully slow. Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Time for a new hard drive ... if you are lucky, slave the dieing one off it and maybe, just maybe you can salvage your data.

thanks for the reply....figured that might be what i would have to do....tried even windows repair and I kept getting different files are corrupt such as (ftdisk.sys and i8042prt.sys) and would not continue. Did total virus scan also
