Can anyone give me some advice as to what is the best software for
intelligent disaster recovery for XP pro? For example i just want it to load
from a cd resotre all the partions and then restore everything else from
tape. The built in windows one seems rather slow to back my system onto
DDS-4 Tapes and does'nt do software compression, and it cant seem to cope
with temporary internet files etc etc..and keep throwing up errors..
Any advice thanks.

I wonder why, in the age of writeable CDs and DVDs, you are still backing up
to tape. But that's your choice. If, in the future, you decide to move to
optical media, I am a great fan of Symantec's Norton Ghost. It has a rich
feature set, is very reliable and works quickly. It has saved my proverbial
bacon on more than one occasion. Ghost is imaging software, which is not
quite the same thing as backup software although it accomplishes the same
thing. Nevertheless, I also backup my user files directly to DVD, from time
to time, by copying them with Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator.

I may be wrong, but I believe it's becoming harder to find consumer backup
software that works with tapes.

Well its quite simple really DDS4 has 20 Gb uncompressed capacity and you
can use them again and again, whilst DVD is 4.7Gb and you can use them only
once.
Also i would like to backup the system partion and program files whithout
having to worry about reinstalling the system etc etc.
Nevermind, thanks for your input.

I beg to differ. DVDs are re-writeable up to 1,000 times. It's the rare
system partition that would require more than two DVDs. Imaging software
makes it fast and easy to back up your system partition - and no
reinstalling is ever required. You are welcome to use backup tape if you
desire, and if that works for you, that's fine. But you may want to look at
the alternatives.
