Hello helpful people,

I recently switched from XP Pro to XP Home (never mind,
its a long story, viruses etc. forced my to format my
harddrive and start from scratch) and now I can't get
access to my external hard drive (Which is full of good
stuff, you know). The drive won't even show up on
the 'My Computer' window, let alone enable access to the
drive.

I have a Firewire/USB 2.0 Acomdata external hard drive
that reads (for some reason) in my device manager as a
SAMSUNG SP1203N IEEE 1394 SBP2. I'm running Dell's stock
network adaptor from 3Com called the 10/100 Mini PCI.

Before the OS change, I could access it with plug-n-
play, but now, all I get is that "BONK" sound that
signals something new to the system.

That means the computer knows its there, but won't let
me access it...

Please help, I've downloaded the most recent drivers
from Dell and have every update Microsoft has put out.
I've run all the diagnostics and troubleshooters that are
available in XP, and I've searched both Dell and
Microsoft's knowledge bases extensively.

XP Pro and XP Home wouldn't read that drive in
different ways, would they?

Why can't I use my external hard drive?

thanks in advance,

Does the drive appear in Disk Management? If so, does it have a drive
letter?

I just found the Disk Management, and it does appear. However, it does not appear in the 'Volume' window, only in the 'Graphical View' window. Also, it does not have a letter. It is described as "Disk 1, Basic," and "Online." Where the C: drive is described as "healthy (system) the external drive is "Unallocated.
I opened the Help and Support center, and tried to Rescan with no luck, then I tried to allocate a name to it, etc., etc.
In the help guide it says that if 'Rescan' doesn't work, then you may have to restart the computer. Well, I've restarted the computer a dozen times and that's never worked before
I am the system's Administrator, so I am not sure why I can't do this

thanks in advance

One more thing, under Properties it says that its location is LUN 0. ? And the only thing I can do with it is create a partition. Will a new partion, which would be its first, allow me to access it? And would I destroy the 20 odd gigs of data that are already on there
thanks again

Suggest you disconnect the drive, delete all drivers reboot and re-install the
drivers. IE Do NOT connect the hard drive until the driver is installed. Best
(after installing driver) to power off, connect HD and then power on.

In Disk Management, you should be able to simply assign it a drive letter.
First thing to do would be right-click on it in the graphical view, and go
from there.
FWI man, FWI ;-)
