DISAPPEARING WORKSTATIONS

Since Networking is "not available" in the win 98 NG, I'M
HOPING that I can get a response here. I put this on 98
yesterday, right b4 it went south.
The school in which I work has about 28
workstations that is setup in a workgroup. (Insufficient
funding for a domain setup,........CHEAP) I'm experiencing
intermittent problems with the stations being seen. Every
once in a while a station or two would just disappear.
Sometimes it would show up again after some time,
sometimes it won't. At times, I have to undo file and
print sharing and then install it again to have them to be
seen once again.

At times, a PC won't be able to print from a remote
printer but there would be nothing wrong with the setup.
ALSO, It would be working just fine a day earlier. Now
I was taught that you are not suppose to have more than 10
nodes in a workgroup, but what I missed was WHY that is.
Is the reason because it would be too taxing on an
administrator or is it to avoid wierd things happening.
such as what I'm experiencing presently<

I hope that there isn't a major difference in networking
between 98 and 2k so that I can get a response to this
question.

Could someone inform me on the main reason why best
practices IS the way it is. AND/OR give me a clue to why
I'm going thru these things. THANX N ADVANCE Wayne B.

What you are probably seeing is the Segment Master browser switching as
clients are rebooted etc. Technically you need 1 segment master browser to
hold the browser role to allow this to be stable.

If you have 1 W2K Pro box atleast you can easily make him a definite segment
master browser by changing the MaintainServerList to Yes. It is set to Auto
by default. This would be a good start. :)

Browsing is a pain. :)
