Disappearing windows?

I have a very bizarre question and I don't know where to even begin to look for help - maybe someone here can point me in the right direction. I've been having serious issues trying to install Norton Internet Security on my machine (which has been an absolute nightmare - but that's another story). They've advised me to edit my registry file, and every time I attempt to do so, the Registry Editor window pops up only to disappear 2 seconds later, before I can get anything done! This also just happened as I was attempting to download a patch from the Microsoft website - I'm able to download it, but then an Install Wizard window appears briefly and then disappears right away.

What do I do now???

Could norton be closing the registry and stopping the installations? Disable
norton and then try to do what you want to do.
