Disappearing Windows Explorer

I installed a program from Nikon to read my uploaded photos. It blew away my
Windows Explorer. Whenever I start Explorer, it flashes on the screen for a
split second and then disappears. I can get the explorer to work in Safe
Mode. I uninstalled the offending Nikon program, but the disappearing
explorer still persists. The problem persists no matter how I start - by
program>start>accessories>explorer, by desktop short cut, or by browsing
with the Run dialog. Any ideas on how to fix the problem?

Best advice would be to contact Nikon. The distributor of the
apparently buggy software.

If you have a copy of the registry from before the installation,
reverting to it (manual procedure W2K) _might_ help. Running
SFC /scanonce from a cmd prompt _might_ help. Mostly few or
know one will know what is the actual source of the problem, unless
you have any error message text or Event Log entry information to
help (maybe).

I learned that setting "launch folder windows in separate process" under
Folder Options will cause the problem. Apparently, I must have too many
programs where one is competeing for memory space with a windows folder.
