Disappearing task bar

I have been running 2000 Professional for years and just the other day
started loosing my taskbar intermittantly. I have to restart the computer to
get it back on the display. I can go into the task manager and retrieve
running applications but I can't access anything through the START menu. When
I started writing this I had no task bar, I left for awhile and my screen
went to screes saver, I wiggled the mouse and my screen came up, with the
task bas visible. What is causing this?????
 
Being only semi computer savy I'm not even sure what your reply means, Sorry.
I can be going back and forth between applications and email and I get
back to my desktop and the task bar is gone.
