Recently my Windows XP Pro machine "forgot" how to print
to a networked Laserjet 4m+ with ethernet jet direct.

I also discovered that the Windows PING command to the
printer would usually fail. However, if I clicked
"repair" on the network icon I would get ONE ping returned.
I can stop XP Pro and run Linux on the same machine, and
Linux has no problem pinging the printer. My server running
Linus has no problem pinging or printing the same printer.

I wonder if a recent Windows security upgrade made my office
computer too secure to print.

I'd start by going to a command prompt, and doing
an "ipconfig /all" when it works, and again when it's broken.

Post the results of the ipconfig /all.
Also, what is the IP address of the printer?

When the ping fails, what is the fail reason?
Is it 'unreachable', or 'timed out' or what?

After reboot or click/repair ping gets one or two echoes, then times out.

ipconfig/all output before and after is identical

Try setting the NIC speed to 10Mb/s, Device Manager/NIC/properties. If
this works, then the cabling is suspect.
