Hi all,
I have a unique problem. In my task bar, by the clock, on boot up,
sometimes several icons will NOT show up, yet the program is running.
If I stopped the program and then restart it, the icons will show. I
have this only happening to 2 of them, but it is a pain to have to
stop and then restart the program. Like I said, it is not all the
time, but enough to be a pain.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Right click on Start and choose Properties. On the Taskbar tab either
uncheck Hide inactive icons or click Customize. To just see them, click the
left pointing arrow on the left edge of the Notification area.

Frank,
Thanks for getting back so fast, but that doesn't work either.

Hey Dan,

I had the same problem and never found the cause, but I
did find a work around. Someone at another forum said that
if you disable windows Universal Plug and Play feature, it
cures the problem. UPnP is an advanced form of regular
Plug and Play. Apparently only a few devices use UPnP so
if you disable it, you will still have regular PnP
capability. To disable UPnP, go to Start>Settings>Control
Panel>Add Remove Programs. When window comes up, click on
one of the big icons on the left call Windows Components
(I think that’s what it's called). Uncheck Universal Plug
and Play. When I did this, all icons came back and XP
still automatically recognizes my digital camera and
external HD. Let me know if it worked.

Thanks

Andre
