Disappearing Forms

Karen

After a day of really productive work on an Access database which included lots of VBA, there was glitch at the end of the day and all of the VBA for the DB is gone. I went back to a backup two days ago and tried to export the forms from the now-bad database to the backup so I wouldn't have to start from scratch on the forms as well as the associated VBA.

The forms won't export and the error message is "Name conflicts with existing module, project, or object library". The forms I'm trying to export weren't even a twinkle in my eye two days ago so they certainly exist in the two day old backup. BTW, one of the forms did seem to export but when I open the destination database, it isn't there.

Any ideas? I'm using Access 2003 but my default database format is Access 2000.

Hi Karen,

Thank you for using MSDN Newsgroup! It's my pleasure to assist you with
your issue.

From the your description, you cannot see the VBA files and when want to
export of the forms you worked to an old back up, you failed with the error
message "Name conflicts with existing module, project, or object library",
right?

Could you provide how you find the VBA is gone, do you save the Forms when
finished?
I suggested you to export the forms to a new place, not overwrite the
backup. Check if the newly saved form could work fine. Second, please use
the following tool to check if the Form corruption in you ACESS.

Baisong,

Well, sure enough the problem occurred after I had selected 'Compact on
Close'. I did download the utility but receive an error 'error compacting
database' so it didn't help to recover my work. It appears to be too late
to copy everything to a new database, all of the VBA on all of the forms is
gone.

I do save forms as I go along but I guess I'll have to start doing a backup
of my work a few times a day.

Hi Karen,

Thank you for using MSDN Newsgroup!

I am sorry to hear that your work cannot be recovered. Here I will provide
you some general guidelines to prevent this from happening:

When finish part of work, backup this work.
When any problems happened, try to save the database to a new place and
then try to compact the database. I suggest using the jetcomp.exe utility
to try to compact the database with.

If it could be save to a new place, create a new blank database and try to
importing objects from the database from the new backup to see if it
recovered. Else, if cannot save to a new place and jetcompact.exe utility
failed, recover from a previous backup.

These steps could reduce the work lost.
