I have a question that I haven't been able to get an
answer to for over a year now. Does anyone know what the
problem is whenever a DVD-ROM hangs (using a software DVD
player such as WinDVD or PowerDVD)and the DVD drive icon
subsequently disappears from explorer? The DVD player is
therefore rendered inoperable and the only recourse is to
reboot?

What is the problem here and what is the solution?
Much thanks for any insight. By the way, I am running
Windows XP Home on a P4 Celeron 2.0 GHz with 512 MB of
RAM but this has happened on several previous machines
with different Windows OSes.

Hi

Check the IDE cable and the 12V power cable
Make sure the connections are firmly connected
Also try to change the IDE cable and use other 12V power cable and check again
If the symtom persists, try update the DVD firmware
Unistall the DVD player, reboot and than reinstall the player
