It's happened far too many times now...often when i update
my Window$ XP... the CD-ROM & DVD-ROM drives
just "disappear", they're not in "my computer" or
in "windows explorer", any program needing a CD doesn't
work obviously...the power to the drives is OFF
aswell....can't open it without a screwdriver!!!
Anyway....this is enough to make me want to switch to an
Apple!!! I wonder if the technitians make money every
time they fix a problem (commission) that's why this
version is so full of problems that never leave!!!
thanx...any help would be greatly appreciated!! (yes i've
rebooted....the only way i found to fix it is to just keep
rebooting...up to 40 times sometimes!!!)

Have you took the cover off and looked at the power
connectors to the drives. Wiggle the connectors to see
if the problem reoccurs. Pull them off and reseat them
to make sure they're tight.

Check your Bios.
Change the bios to auto detect the drives. This should
clear your problem.
Take note: When you start your computer watch for the bios
to detect the drives. If you can see them in the bios and
they still won't work in windows then you are having a IRQ
conflict. If you can't see them in the bios then you are
having a master/slave issue and need to rectify one or the
other problem.

The fact that the OP said that power to the drives
was lost so they had to open the tray with a screw
driver, makes me think this particular problem is not
with the BIOS or XP.

how do you check your bios, cause my drives are gone as
well but mine will open just by pushing the button.
