disappearing desktop icons

Approximately four of my desktop icons disappear at random from my screen from time to time. The placeholder remains but the icon itself disappears. I can select properties and try to "reset" the icon but nothing is displayed. If I reboot, the lost icon will again reappear but another of the four disappears. This is driving me crazy...how do I fix this?
 
Dan, rt click on Desktop>Select Properties>Desktop>Customize
Desktop>Uncheck Run Desk Cleanup box.
