Disappearing Contact Groups -- What's the cause?

What might cause my contact groups in Outlook to disappear from my
contacts list; I have twice found them in my deleted files in Outlook?

Sorry, I should have said "distribution lists" rather than groups. For
some reason, all the distribution lists I created were not in the list
of contacts where they should be, but were in with the deleted emails.
I moved them back to the contacts list. This has happened twice.
Got any ideas?
 
No. There have been no reports of DL's getting deleted all by themselves.
Are you certain you haven't hit the Delete button inadvertently at some time
or another while in the Contacts Folder?
