It may not make a difference, but try the CD ROM as a master on IDE channel
2.

I have found this link:

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:
Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and
the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a
particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to
reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the
software vendor for assistance.

I have tried this to resolve a few issues with disappearing drives, but
I have found it to be hit and miss. Win2K it works well, but XP is hit
and miss.
It sort of fixes the problem, but it doesn't explain why it happened in
the first place. Usually I find after closer investigation, it has been
a user modification of some sort, such as incorrect jumper settings (and
yes, the drives WILL show up even with incorrect settings.. Soyo boards
are wonderful for this), or incorrect BIOS configuration, or improper
cables.
I hope your problem is resolved.

Wheaty.
