Disappearing CD-ROM Drives in XP Pro

I have been operating Windows XP Pro since it came out in '02. For some reason, both my CD Rom Drive and my CD-RW have disappeared from my hardware profile. Niether is listed in "My Computer" or the "Device Manager" yet both are plugged in and have been working fine in the past. I am currently unable to run any programs / disks of any kind from either drive. Anyone see this happen before or have a fix?

Same problem since installing new Iomega CD-RW -- have been told to run installatiln CD again and then "update" as soon as possible. Hasn't worked yet -- keep getting "serious error" messages.

Were you able to resolve this problem? Even I have started getting a similar problem. After I boot up the system (Win XP Pro), I am able to see DVD-ROM (preinstalled) and CD-RW (LiteOn installed by me in middle 2002). I usually leave my system on. After some time (?), the CD-RW disappears from the system. I cannot access it, untill I reboot the machine. Then all is well.

Anybody any ideas?

Now I'm getting a little paranoid. My XP just started displaying the
Safely remove hardware icon for my CDRW drive.
