Disappearing CD Rom Drive

Windows 2000 no longer recognizes my CD Rom drive; the
icon has disappeared and Device Manager shows Error Code
19. At the suggestion of manufacturer I used a boot disk
for Windows 98 which recognized CD drive in DOS. Any ideas
for restoring my CD drive [Mechanically it works--lights
up & runs]
