disappearing anti-virus programs, etc.

Below is part of an email I sent to the AVG folks.
Tonight I downloaded from EZ Armor. That firewall part
wreaked havoc on this already very much confused machine.
Last night I downloaded an anti-virus program from
download.com. That program says it found I-Worm and
Pester. I may very well be hallucinating after all the
reading I've been doing but I would swear for one of the
brief moments in my world of confusing windows that
something said "end task should not see me.
Please oh please can someone tell me why this machine
is not only far too slow, why are things disappearing as
well?

Running Windows XP on my son's machine here. Machine
was running slow, strange error messages, that kind of
stuff. Tried to reload the Norton's Utilities from the
installation cd as the program didn't seem to be working
properly. The program didn't load, various error messages.
Went to Symantec's website, ran a scan on this machine for
what took forever, received this report: Windows is
infected with W32.HLLW.Gaobot.gen.
I would like to tell you that your program took care of
this problem but I can't seem to keep it (AVG Free
Edition) from disappearing long enough to see if it would
work. I did the latest update thing in between
disappearances. Everytime I get to the first window, it
always says "Control Center Not Fully Functional!". If I'm
lucky enough to click fast enough and get to where I can
tell your program to "Run Complete Test" or anything else
for that matter, the program disappears. When I pass the
cursor over your symbol in the Task Bar, it disappears.
My apologies for being so wordy, readers. Thank you

Information on the W32.HLLW.Gaobot.gen worm:

..hllw.gaobot.gen.html

If you are not already behind a firewall then activate the
one that comes with XP. Run Help and Support and search:
firewall.

Try booting into Save Mode and then running your anti-
virus program. It's certainly possible that you have
multiple infections. Make notes and search suspect files
on Google - sometimes you can find a site that deals
specifically with that worm/virus/trojan etc.

It would appear that you have been out on the Internet
without taking adequate precautions. For advice on the
things that MUST be done see:

Thanks, Bill. As I said, this is my son's machine. It was
out of my care and used by others for several months. Will
try your suggestions.

Susie, how many AV programs are you trying to run on the machine at the same time?

I believe that I counted 4 (AVG, EZ Armor, Norton and something from the web) uninstall them ALL, then install 1 of them. Running more than 1 AV program at a time can create problems.

You wrote that you are using AVG free and wrote to Grisoft, do not expect an answer because
"The AVG Free Edition is fully featured anti-virus software with the following restrictions:

a.. Basic user Interface only
b.. Disabled Advanced Scheduling of Tests
c.. Disabled Creating of Your Own Tests
d.. NO TECHNICAL SUPPORT"
you do see the "NO TECHNICAL SUPPORT' line? AVG free does work just fine, I used it for 2 years before I purchased the pro versinon of AVG which does provide support.

Hi Jeff......I only ran one at a time. They were never all
on here @ the same time. I did not expect an answer from
AVG as I told them in my email. I was merely hoping to
alert them of my problems in case a paying user
encountered such a mess. I thank you for your time.
