Disappaering dialog boxes

A

AMANDA LITWAK

I recently moved. I've had my computer in storage for a while. Almost as
soon as I connected to the Internet, I got the Sasser worm. I cleaned it
off my system, but in the process of trying do fix my problems, I've
encountered a new, odd problem. Some, but not all, dialog boxes disappear
before I can interact with them . The dialog box I have for McAfee, to run a
virus scan, comes up but disappears before I can request anything. When I
try to install a newer version, no matter how fast I am at clicking, one of
the dialog boxes along the way disappears and I cannot continue. Tonight I
tried to update Windows with service pack 1. I downloaded it but when
trying to install it, I can't answer the question fast enough and the
installation dialog box disappears and I can't continue.

What could be causing the dialog boxes to disappear like that? Thanks.

It's a virus.
If Pro

Type in Start Run

cmd /k tasklist > "%userprofile%\desktop\tasklist.txt"

This will create a file on your desktop called tasklist.txt. Post it's contents.

If Home Type (this will work on pro)
msinfo32 /categories +SWEnvRunningTasks /report "%userprofile%\desktop\msinfo.txt"

This will create a file on your desktop called msinfo.txt. Post it's contents.

and I'll tell you which one it is then we'll kill it.

Hello David;
the original thread here seems to have gone cold, but I
think that I have a similar problem.

I am trying to install the the MS04-11 security patch on an XP Home sp1
machine (trying to clean sasser out for a relative..); have opened the "DOS"
commandline Window, but all output from commands run e.g. the /help or /l
switch to KB835732 installer displays the output briefly (including
confirmation that it is unzipping itself to a temporary directory) in an "XP"
like WIndow that vanishes without any action on my part.

Trying to run the actual security fix with "force restart" option causes the
"setup wizard" screen to appear briefly, but it then disappears before you
can complete the installation of the fix....

Trying your suggestion below for getting a list of tasks does not create any
task list file (I have taskman running anyway; does this matter ?); but if I
run msinfo32 without the /report switch, the XP window with the sysinfo
appears permanently, so I have saved the task list...(will post it here
shortly when I have figured out how to transfer to my secure PC that is
driving the Internet connection..)

thanks in advance for your advice.

Charlie.
