Disabling System Restore

Hi, people,

I need to disable system restore to deal with a virus that crept under
my (bang up to date!!!) virus scanner. I will turn it back on once
I've cleaned the machine.

Does disabling system restore cause it to lose all previous restore
points, or will they still be there when I turn it back on?

Debbie

Yes, all restore points will be deleted when you disable SR. You cannot
selectively delete the restore points.

The files in the System Volume Information folder are the backup files
created by the System Restore program. You can automatically delete all but
the latest SR file safely with the Disk Cleanup utility. Go to Start/All
Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Cleanup. Click the More Options tab
and then the Cleanup button in the System Restore section.

If you have a virus file in a System restore point, you will most likely
want to delete all of the SR files.

Yes it does. What I would do in your case is wait until one more
Restore point has been made on the now clean machine; then use
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Clean up, and
in its More Options the one to discard all but the most recent restore
point, and the stored copy of he virus will go with the discarded points
