FOR BUILD 5472: After booting Windows Vista and BEFORE logging in, the
Windows XP startup sound can be heard. How do I disable the sound from
playing?

on a related note, when shutting down, the Windows XP shutdown sound can be
briefly heard before being cut off mid-sound. How do I disable this sound
from playing?

Click the Start button, type sou then click Audio Devices and Sound Schemes.
Click the Sounds tab in the dialog box that opens. Set the Sound to (none)
for Exit Windows, Start Windows, Windows Logon, Windows Logoff, and anything
else that looks annoying.

See, that's why I said BEFORE I log in. This sound is heard in between
Windows Vista boots and displays the logon screen. I have already disabled
the Windows Startup and Shutdown sounds which are heard AFTER I input my
password and log in. This behavior is new to this build.

I even already disabled the Startup/Shutdown sounds for the Administrator
account to no avail.
