Hello,
I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, as
this is my first visit, so I hope you'll excuse me if
it's not.
I'm having some slight trouble with my HP Pavilion N3310
laptop running XP Pro. The root of the problem is that
the LCD only displays up to 800x600. I'd really like to
go just one step higher than this if I can hack it to do
so (I know I can't - that's the second problem. I keep
trying anyway). The other day I discovered the Multiple
Monitor feature and was playing around with it. Since
it's a laptop, the LCD is primary and any monitor
connected to VideoOut is secondary. Well, I don't have a
monitor to connect, but I was playing with the settings
on the secondary monitor to see if it would go higher
than 800x600 (stupid mistake #1). Well, it didn't. It
accepted the higher resolution and saved the settings as
default (problem #1). Then when I rebooted, it choked on
the higher-resolution-than-can-be-displayed and displayed
black instead. Not helpful.
So, I managed to get it to boot almost properly if I boot
into VGA mode. However, I still haven't solved the
problem - and VGA has it's own problem.
Whenever I boot up into VGA, it displays in 640x480. To
someone that likes 1024x784, this is REALLY frustrating.
I can change it to 800x600, but the settings don't get
saved somehow. Every time I boot up again, it's back at
640x480 (problem #2).
So, I need advice mainly on Problem # 1: How do I a)
disable multiple monitors from VGA mode or b) what are
the required keystrokes to navigate blindly in normal
mode to the Settings dialog so I can switch to Monitor #1
(which I know work and is set to 800x600)?
I'm the only user of my laptop, so my login is set as
Administrator. I like to think I know a bit about
computers (ie I'll very likely understand what you tell
me) but after this incident I think I'll just stick to
Clumsy Oaf and let it go.
Any help would be hugely appreciated. I'm about to
say "Computers are a result of sin" and chuck the whole
thing outside.
