The messenger service that appears in the add/remove programs *only* removes it from the startup menu. MS has actually hidden it so it does not appear in the add/remove programs. However, you can get it to appear in the add/remove programs so you can actually uninstall the pesky critter
Here's just one of many web sites that gives you the information on how to do it. Sure made a difference on my computer when I got to truly uninstall it

You can easily uninstall "MSN MESSENGER" via the Add/Remove Program
applet in your Control Panel
Or you can disable "Windows Messenger"
Open "Windows Messenger" and from the Toolbar selec
Tools > Options > Preferences and uncheck
"Run this program when Windows starts" an
"Allow this program to run in the background", the
click OK
