I enabled the Disabling of Launching Windows Messenger
automatically on start-up, and windows started lagging
noticeably, especially after completely booting-up.

Setting the Disabling of Launching Windows Messenger back
to the default button (Not Configured) hasn't changed
this. Does anyone have an idea why this may be happening,
and how to remedy this?

Check your startup settings to find out what is causing this.
Applications that start with Windows can be found here:
- the WIN.INI, section [windows], entries "run=" and "load="
- the Registry keys
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
- the folders
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ALL USERS\START MENU\PROGRAMS\STARTUP
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\{username}\START MENU\PROGRAMS\STARTUP

XP" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310560) and "How to Perform a

To disable the Windows Messenger: Start the Messenger and in Tools >
Options disable "Run this program when Windows starts" and "Allow this
program to run in the background". Close the Messenger.
Run REGEDIT.EXE and navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express. Insert a new
DWORD entry
Hide Messenger
here and set it to a value of
2
