Disabling Flash

How do I remove or disable Flash ?
I've checked all the Internet Explorer options and
Add/Remove programs... don't see anything.
Flash advertisments are getting soooo obnoxous, I'm ready
to drop the whole Flash functionality.
[Yes, you can R-click on the Ad and turn off Loop &
Play...but that dosn't always work, and it too much
trouble.
Other suggestions ?

Use one of the browsers that provides a switch to turn Flash off, such as
Avant:
