Disabling Flash

I have a sensitivity to flashing lights. Recently my ISP, AOL, has
started increasingly using (I think) Macromedia Flash to animate
advertisements. These put me in some danger. How can I disable the
software while I am using the PC, while leaving the possibility of
restarting it if others need it? If all that is impossible, then just
disabling Flash will do. Right-clicking on the ad and unchecking
everything seems to have no effect.
Many thanks,
Robert.

Or use Flash Killer in SpywareBlaster.

SpywareBlaster
[[SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from
ever being installed.
The most important step you can take is to secure your system. And
SpywareBlaster is the most powerful protection program available.]]

Uninstall the POS Flash player.

Thanks Wes for such a comprehensive answer.
The best solution for me would probably be Clearpoint Systems (I don't
feel confident about manually tweaking the Registry) but the link you
gave is not entirely valid. It reaches the site, but this displays
Error 404 - Page Not Available.
No POS player is listed in Add/Change Programs on Control Panel. (Is
"ShockWave" anything to do with this - just a thought.) So would you
kindly give more instructions on how to find/uninstall the POS Flash
player if Clearpoint can't be reached.
Thanks once again.
Robert.

Another thing would be to try downloading Firefox, and installing the
extension to block flash. I did it mainly to speed up the dialup
process. Any frame with flash in it just shows me a button with a f
(f). If I want to see the flash for some reason, I can click it.
Otherwise, it's all off by default.

SWEET!

Awaiting your responses with baited breath, I remain, yours truly,

I have previously used this one: flashswitch.
I think it will meet your needs.

Thank you to all contributors, but a special thanks to Mae. I went for
her solution because of its simplicity remembering always that if it
CAN go wrong, it WILL.
I have installed Flashswitch which is working well. Thanks for your
timely suggestion Mae - my sanity will be the better for it.
Best wishes from England.
Robert.

POS stands for Piece Of S***.

I also don't like these new AOL features. For mail I now use the AOL
Communicator, and Mozilla for newsgroups and surfing. The AOL software
runs in a virtual machine, which I can restore to a clean state whenever
something unwanted happened.
