Disabling Alps Toucnpad on notebook

I

Ian A. White

Hi,

I have a notebook with an Alps Touchpad. The problem is I use a mouse
as the Touchpad is a little cumbersome for CAD.

At the moment both operate and there is no hardware conflict, just an
operator conflict because I have to be very careful so that I do not let
any part of my hands get too close to the pad surface otherwise it is
taken as a touchpad action.

The touchpad has its own software loaded in Add/Remove Programs, and is
seen in Device Manager as a PS/2 mouse. I can uninstall the software
and remove the device (as suggested by my supplier's support) but on
restarting, the hardware is found and reinstalled.

The notebook is a Compal CL50 (also sold as a BCL50) Centrino notebook.
There is no setting in BIOS to disable the touchpad or the PS/2 port.

I have tried setting up different hardware profiles, but the touchpad is
one item I cannot disable no matter which profile I choose.

Does anyone know of a way to disable the touchpad and/or PS/2 port? I
suspect that being able to disable the PS/2 port will disable the
touchpad.

Thanks

Start, Run, type in "msconfig" (without quotes), OK. Click the Startup Tab
and look for a listing for the touchpad. If you find it, uncheck the box. It
won't startup the next time you boot.

You might need to modify the electronics to have a toggle switch
physically disconnect the pointer device. I had to do that on my
laptop to be able to use a PS/2 scroll mouse.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately it did not work. What
disabling the program does is disable the enhancements. I suspect the
same thing would happen if I uninstalled the touchpad software.

It is PnP that is the problem. I believe that the only way would be to
disable the PS/2 port or the touchpad itself. Unfortunately the way
manufacturers go these days, they don't like feedback and so it looks
like I am stuck.

It was worth a try.

Thanks.

I don't think I will go down that path. At least I can use both devices
simultaneously. The problem is that I don't have to actually touch the
pad for it to sense a touch. If any part of me gets too close it is
read as a touch.

Thanks.
