I tried the suggestions from Og and Kawosa, however the tag *Device Usage*
is not accessible. It does not highlite to open and use. Any suggestions to
get past this new wrinkle????

Okay, let's try harder.
Are you running XP Pro and do you have administrative rights?
Is this a Dell laptop by chance?
Do you have a Synaptics icon in the System Tray, (Right lower corner)?
Click the icon and disable the touchpad from there.
No icon? No problem, go to control panel>mouse settings and look for a
touchpad disable feature from there.
Still no luck? Get back with the make and model of your device and we'll
try again.

FWIW some Compaq models would not allow touchpad disable but would allow a
simultaneous mouse usage.
