Can I just get an answer to the question?

How would you like it if you asked for direction and the person asked you
why you wanted to go there?

Because there may have been other details that are pertinent that you failed
to supply.
Your boss obviously is talking out of his a*rse and has no idea what he's
doing.

Running Vista Ultimate - I was ordered to disable UAC. Now I have the
little red shield in the tray. How can I get rid of it for just the UAC
notification? I still want it to bark at me when the virus defs (AVG)
go out of date and it can't update for whatever reason.

he's doing.

Nevertheless he is my boss and I have my orders.
So should I wait for one of the MVPs to respond or are you going to
grace me with your words of wisdom some more?

Gotcha about Gordy.

I set it to the middle one, "Don't notify me, but display the icon."

Now I still want it to bark if the virus definitions aren't updated.
I'm pretty sure AVG does, but a few times over the years I have notices
it just goes from the color tray icon to the black and white - something
people around here won't notice and alert me.

Was the answer to the OP's question supposed to be in there somewhere?
Could you quote the relevent parts here?

Your boss should educate himself (or herself) about UAC.

There doesn't seem to be any way to do what you want to do via the user
interface. Maybe there is a registry hack, but I don't know yet.

There is no easy answer, you can only get close. The order listed
I listed the sites are as close to relevance as I could get them.

Sometimes there just are not simple answers to simple questions.

Err no you moron - there might have been far more to the OP's question than
he cared to tell us.
Idiot.

It's not that easy to disable just the UAC alert, without turning it all
off.

Open regedit and make your way to:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center

You'll need to create a new Dword (32-bit) called UACDisableNotify, and give
it a value of 1 (either hex or dec).

To enable it again at a later date, just delete the key.

Gordons question was indeed valid. You're a jerk and Justin's arrogant
approach doesn't deserve any help.

I have the UAC problem solved.

If you turned it off, you did the right thing.

Now, if you hate all the seemingly endless disk grinding that occurs
when you reboot/restart, look at turning off Superfetch.

Works great here... and I've notice NO slowdown in performance.

There never was a UAC problem. You got yourself some other problems
now, but who cares...

Fair enough. Having read those previously, I didn't recall anything that
addresses his "problem" specifically.

....doesn't mean that they weren't there though.

Other problems? Yeah, I don't want Gordy's boys coming after me.

Yeah, sure you would. Let me guess, you own your own company and do
