Disabled Display driver - PLEASE HELP

While installing a new ATI Display driver, I encountered
an error that caused the install to fail when half
complete. Now I can't uninstall what's there nor can I
install the old driver. The message said to try setting
the display driver to the default driver, but I was on a
default driver already. So I disabled the display
driver, figuring windows would reinstall the default
driver. WRONG. Now the system boots with the XP startup
screen. But when it would normally go to the login
screen, the display is completely blank (no mouse
either). I can't figure out how to turn the default
display driver back on.

Now a comedy of problems:
- I can't get safe mode to work because of an agp440
driver problem (found it in the knowledge base).
- I can't get into the recovery console to fix the agp440
problem because it rejects my administrator password -
but I'm sure it's my administrator account password
because I reset it from another computer on my network
(using Computer Management connecting to the problem
computer) - I don't know what password it wants.
- I can telnet into the computer, but don't know if there
are command lines to help
- I can't remote connect because I don't have it
configured on the machine with the problem.
- This is a home computer on a home network - I can get
to the data on the computer, but I've spent yeasr
configuring this machine and really don't want to have to
reinstall windows to recover.

I'm out of ideas - PLEASE HELP

Tnx,

Joe

Boot-up the pc and press F8 before Windows starts to load to bring up the
Start-up menu.

Try the VGA Boot Mode - it 'should' boot using the standard Windows VGA
driver and let you fix the problem.

Martin.

Martin,

Thanks for the idea, but I already tried all the F8
options. The VGA Boot Mode does load the VGA driver for
the startup only, once the system is up the screen blanks
again.

I'm so desparate that I've even tried using another
machine to figure out the keystrokes to get into the
display properties and reenable the display, but when I
get to the "advanced" button, the machine crashes - must
be because there are no advanced properties for a driver
that's disabled.

Hi Joe,

Try Control/Alt/Delete. File/NewTask Run and type in: msconfig
Then go to Bootini and put a check in the box that reads: /Basevideo.
Apply/Ok, reboot.

Good idea Kelly, but he can't get to the desktop!

How's about sticking a different video card in?
