Disabled controls not greyed out display double text

Hi

I have just come across something unusual: I was setting up an existing
database on a couple of new Dell laptops when I noticed that disabled
buttons, which would normally display the text 'greyed out' are now no longer
doing this.

The text is in black but kind of double, like the font has a shadow of the
same weight (slightly difficult to describe). This I imagine must be
something to do with the display settings, but I couldn't see anything
strange when I checked them. Both machines have a widescreen display, one
was an Inspiron 630 the other an Inspiron 6000, both with WXGA displays.

It is likely to be quite frustrating for the users, as they will now be
inclined to try to click the button and of course will get no response. Has
anyone come across this and found a solution?

Many thanks.

Ondine.

It sounds as if it is the way the video card, display drivers, and or
display handles things. Some things to check,

1) Are you running at the screens "native" resolution? This will normally be
the highest resolution available in the Settings tab of the Screen
Properties.

2) Check for an updated video driver. The computers don't always ship with
the newest drivers installed.

3) Install the ClearType PowerToy for WinXP and see if adjusting the
settings there has any effect.

Thanks for your suggestions. In response:

1. The resolution was the highest available, 1280 x 800 I think.

2. The laptops were brand new: I have suggested that the client checks with
Dell to see if they can help them, but I don't know if they will get anywhere.

3. I will have a look at ClearType PowerToy next time I'm over there and
see if it shows anything up
