I used to be able to do a copy/paste of files from hard
drive to cd but now some wizard comes up and says "You
have files waiting to be copied" and it takes forever and
then it says the files are read only. This started
happening after a service call to Dell and they went into
config sys and reg edit. How can I get rid of it? Tried
take no action on pop up. Didn't work.

Open My Computer, double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
Right click your CD drive
Properties
Recording tab
Uncheck: Enable CD Recording on this drive check box
Apply
OK
Close My Computer

Just to add to Wesley's post, if you mean by "I used to be able" on your
previous computer but are unable to do this system, this is known as
packet writing and XP does not support that function natively. This
requires third party software such as the Direct CD component of Easy CD
Creator, www.roxio.com or the InCD component of Nero, www.nero.com.

Check the web sites for version compatibility with XP as well as compatible
CD-Writers.

I make this point because, usually, though not always, when packet writing
software is installed, you don't receive this message and moving and copying
files to CD is seamless and the same as once was done with floppy disks.
