Disable thumbnail view

I have XP and Office XP running on a 733 mhz 128 MB system. Since my memory
resources are constantly challenged, I'd love to be able to disable the
thumbnails view and rid my folders of the thumbs.db file. Can this be done
and if so, how?

Control Panel>Folder Options>Display
Check " Don not place thumbnails in cache..." or something alike (sorry, am
dutch speaking and have Dutch XP)
