Cindy

HI.
We recently had a virus effect our computer and I have
quarantined it. However, since then when I do a system
start-up, our home page for the internet continues to
revert to one we have not chosen. I have re-set the home
page to sympatico.ca but every time the computer is shut
down and started up again, it reverts to this other one we
don't want. I have found instructions on "disabling
system restore" for Windows 98 and Windows ME, but can't
figure out how to fix this problem with Windows 2000.

Can anyone help?

Thanks!

Hi Cindy,
The same thing has happened to me today. Has anyone
resolved it for you yet? I've been looking for access to
the shutdown script in win 2000 but have not found a
resolution yet, If I find one, I'll let you know.
Thanks
Keith

There's malware out there that will reset the homepage in your browser. My
hunch is that your machine is still infected with something. You should
probably do an adware scan. I in addition you might want to make sure you
have the most recent signatures from your antivirus vendor and run another
antiviral scan.

I'm not sure from your mail what this has to do with system restore. Only
XP and ME have system restore, not Win2k.

Hi Cindy,
I de-installed internet explorer and then re-installed it
from scratch. Whilst re-installing a dialogue box informed
me that the original files were still there and offered me
the options of quitting or re-writing the files. I chose
re-write and that seemed to fix it. Also, I de-installed
by using add/remove programs in the control panel and
there was a strange number behind the internet explorer
entry, one that I had never seen before. It was a fairly
long random string, but I can't remember the details. Now
everything is working hunky-dory again, but I notice that
internet explorer does not appear as a separate item in
the add/remove programs page, but that may require a cold
boot to appear.
I installed mozilla in the interim, so that I could access
and re-load ie explorer from the msoft webiste. But I
think I might use mozilla instead, it's safer. Too many
people out there breaching ie security for my taste. The
worst thing was, it was some sort of porn virus because it
added nasty porn links into the favourties folder, and
from time to time it would randomly spawn a new browser
session pointing to a porn site. The home page was
continually re-set to some sort of sort engine, with
special seedy pre-set options.
Hope this helps
K
